The Moona light sculpture is designed by Jakob Uhlin for By Republiken—a stunning artisan creation made from paper and recycled plastics. This pendant lamp features a silk paper exterior supported by a locally sourced and handmade sheet of recycled plastic.
The lamp's geometric triangular components deliver a captivating, faceted aesthetic that creates an intriguing visual effect. Light is uniquely diffused from various angles, offering a dynamic illumination experience.
THE PRODUCTION PROCESS
Our production process begins with the collection of used polypropylene containers, commonly found in food packaging. After a thorough cleaning, we grind these containers into plastic granules, which are then remelted through heat and pressure into thin sheets. The resulting plastic has a beautiful marbled and swirling appearance. This method creates unique patterns reminiscent of natural designs.
The colors and pattern of the light sculptures are influenced by the characteristics of the original containers. For the Moona light sculpture, we specifically select white and transparent plastic containers, resulting in sheets that evoke the beauty of a blizzard or the surface on the moon. These remelted plastic sheets are covered on both sides with semi-transparent paper, creating a poetic and visually stunning finish.
Using a hand-driven punch, we meticulously cut the triangular building pieces from the remelted sheets. This sustainable process revitalizes materials that would otherwise be discarded, resulting in a one-of-a-kind lamp sculpture. Each piece is distinct, featuring unique internal imagery that enhances its character and charm. We build each lamp by hand by connecting the building pices together in specific patterns.

We always check the triangular pieces to ensure their overall quality. There might be natural imperfections as part of the use of the recycled materials. We always send spare triangular pieces if you want to change some of the pieces.
