This exquisite stoneware sconce, designed by Marianne Starck for Michael Andersen & Son, features a charming boy holding an urn. In addition to holding a candle, this versatile sconce can be used as a wall-hung vase for a few flowers or branches, and it looks equally impressive even without candles or flowers.

This rare Michael Andersen ceramic figurine is executed with a stunning Persia glaze with a square-patterned glaze showcasing the special craquelé technique developed at Michael Andersen pottery in the 1930s.

The reverse side of the sconce is marked with the Michael Andersen & Son hallmark, featuring a shield with three fishes, which also represents the coat of arms for the town of Rønne on the island of Bornholm, where the pottery was situated.  The piece is  also marked with the initials "E" and "X" alongside the logo of Michael Andersen & Son.

Marianne Starck (1931-) joined Michael Andersen & Son in 1955 and became a pivotal artistic force, especially in stoneware production.
